How to Compare AI Generation APIs

Single-model APIs, aggregators and full studio platforms differ in what they make you build yourself. How to judge an AI generation API before wiring it into a product.

What you are really choosing is how much you build

A single-model API gives you one endpoint and leaves queueing, retries, storage, moderation and billing to you. An aggregator normalises several models behind one interface. A studio platform brings its own asset handling and accounting. The pricing differences between these are small next to the difference in how much infrastructure you end up owning, which is the number nobody puts on a comparison page.

Asynchronous generation is the part that surprises people

Image and especially video generation takes long enough that a synchronous request is the wrong shape. That means job submission, polling or webhooks, a place to hold results, and a sane story for what happens when a job fails halfway. An API that hands you a job id and nothing else has quietly made all of that your problem, and it is usually more work than the integration itself.

Model churn is a maintenance cost, not a feature

The frontier model list changes every few months. If each model has its own parameter names, aspect-ratio conventions and prompt quirks, every addition is an integration project and every deprecation is a migration. A consistent interface across models is worth more over a year than any single model being marginally better today.

Check the operational details before the benchmarks

Rate limits, concurrency, error semantics, how failed jobs are billed, and what the retention policy is on generated assets. These decide whether the thing survives contact with production traffic. Output quality is easy to evaluate in an afternoon and easy to switch later; operational behaviour is what you discover at the worst possible moment.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call model providers directly instead?
If you need exactly one model and already run the surrounding infrastructure, direct is simple and hard to beat. The calculation changes once you want several models, or once you find yourself rebuilding job queueing, asset storage and credit accounting - at which point you are building a platform as a side effect of shipping a feature.
How should billing work for generation in my own product?
Per-generation accounting maps far more cleanly onto a product you resell than a flat platform subscription does, because your cost moves with your customers' usage instead of sitting as fixed overhead. Whatever model you pick, make sure failed generations are not billed, or your margin absorbs every upstream error.
What should a proof of concept actually test?
Submit a real job, poll it to completion, handle a deliberate failure, and fetch the asset. That full round trip exercises the parts that matter. Generating one impressive image through a playground tells you about the model, not about the API you are going to depend on.
How much does model choice matter long term?
Less than teams expect. Models converge quickly and the leader changes often, which is precisely why the ability to switch without rewriting your integration matters more than which one is ahead this quarter.
